The day started out great with not even the second rod out and it was fish on, we boated a nice four and half pound striper.
Then it was my dads turn, he lost it, then he tried again and then the leader broke, so that was my fault, then the bite died for a couple hours, we kept fishing and finally the bite came back on and we ended the day landing five Stripers and losing four and had a couple good hits that the fish got the bait and not the hook.
So if you are interested in catching some hard fighting Stripers give me a call, and I will put you on some fish.<br great bite going with our home made spoons, we caught trout and a couple of kokanee and a nice King Salmon, we kept the King and the kokanee, then we switched over to fish just for kokanee and it was not long as we boated our limits of fat kokanee.
Okay ,
I have some better news.
After that terrible day at Melones, we were back on Don Pedro, and we had some terrific action!
This lake has been the best I have seen in recent years.
We are having no problem catching our clients limits of fish.
The trip before our dreadful day at Melones produced some quality fish for two clients and we were off the lake by 10:00 oclock on a Friday with some big Rainbows and and some quality Kings.
Then on June the 8Th at Don Pedro with two clients, the day started off with a triple and we boated two of the fish, the first fish was a nice Brown Trout and the second was a kokanee, so now I have the hardest fish of all to catch in the box, and the rest is down hill from here, the action was off the hook for us, as it took some time to finally catch some quality Rainbows, after one client loosing two good fish in a row and then the other client finally catching a good fish, but hey that's fishing, and as long as I can put you on fish.
The day was a great one one as we had a Don Pedro grand slam, Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon,King Salmon and Rainbow Trout, that does not happen very often.
Then a trip Friday with a single client that was no problem catching his limit of fish and on this trip he had three different species of fish.
Then a trip on Saturday the 12Th of June with three clients, the day started off with high winds and I was sceptical of putting the boat in the water, but after thinking it over we put the boat in the water and was off, we were greeted with big waves that was coming over the bow, as we made our way to the fishing grounds and found a spot where we could fish out of he wind and the fish were in a good biting mood.
It did not take long to get our first fish in the box, then it happened we had a double with two fish going both good fish that I could see, the first one was a very nice Rainbow that was well over two pounds that we boated, and then the other fish was pulling even harder and just as I was telling the guy to slow down and not to pull so hard the fish came out of the water and I could see that it was a big Brown Trout and just then the hook came out and it was gone.
The fishing was going great and before I knew it we had 11 fish in the cooler and then one of the rods went down very hard, as I passed the rod off to one of the clients, I could tell the fish was a good one at that, the fish was stripping line and as I loosened up the drag and was coaching the guy on what to do, we were getting the fish close to the net as it made several good runs , and then as the fish was getting closer I could see the fish coming towards the surface and was getting ready to jump, and before I could tell the guy to reel faster and drop the rod the fish jumped out of the water at least three feet in the air, and he was broad side to us , and we could see just how big the fish was, and when the fish jumped it was gone, just that fast as it spit the hook!
This fish was at least four pounds if not bigger.
However the day ended at 10:15 with three limits of fish, oh and the guy that lost the big brown he did catch another smaller brown, almost another grand slam, we were shy the kokanee.
Thanks
Monte Smith

Hi All.
I know its been some time since I posted anything and I told you I had a trip planned to New Melones for some kokanee, well we made the trip and I was expecting some decent fishing for some kokes, as we left the dock at Tuttletown and got passed the drop off I started dropping lines and just as I got the fourth rod in the water we had a fish on, but as fast as we hooked our first fish it was gone just as fast.
I had high hopes for my three clients, and I always expect the best when fishing.
After reading the reports from the lake saying it was good fishing, man things were not even close, the fishing was tough!
After seven hours of fishing hard we only boated four kokanee and one small brown trout, we lost two other fish and missed three other bites for our efforts.
I trolled all over the lake, the fish are really scattered and at many differant depths, and most everyone that was out was having a hard time as well as they were going by us with there hands in the air as to say where are the fish and boats were going back and fourth searching for fish.
Not a good day at all, I sure hope it gets better as I know the fish are there somewhere.
Monte
disappointed us at all.
Yes, the moon was coming full and we had no problem at all boating mixed limits of King Salmon and Rainbow trout for our clients, Tuesdays clients we were able to get in a great day of fishing, before a Storm was coming and they boated and released many fish before the days end keeping there ten nice fish, they kept four trout and six kings, then Friday the fishing was just as good, as we fished just after a couple days of hard rain, ,it was a great day, we caught some quality fish with the biggest king weighing in at Three and a half pounds.
I can not express enough now is the time to go fishing, and now the weather looks to be great for for sometime (I hope), with some trips scheduled for Melones <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" Friday the 21st with four clients at Don Pedro, this time they hired me to go out in there boat and help them with there equipment, so I packed some gear, like lures and a couple of rods and off I went.
I used my home made spoons and we hammered the fish, and thought the fishing was good before, but this time it was smokin hot!
The wind was blowing and the fish were coming on board fast.
We ended up keeping 18 fish at the days end, we also caught a small brown that we let go, one guy lost three fish in a row, everyone lost fish on this day, we also caught a nice bass that went back in the pond.
The three biggest fish were (trout) that type='text'>

Hi everyone,
Man all can say the fishing is on here at Don Pedro!
We fished today May the 18Th for great action!!! with three clients.
I did not even get the second rod out and we had fish on, it took awhile to get the fourth rod out and before I knew it we had six nice trout in the box and we lost a couple of fish in the heat of the moment.
We have been running nothing but our home made spoons to catch our trout and some salmon.
The water is warming to the 70 degree mark on the surface, so that means the fish are dropping.
Then around ten or so we swithced over to roll shad at much deeper depths for salmon, it took sometime to get the fish interested in our bait and locate them, but once we did we had some decent action, we ended the day with 13 fish in the boat and lost some salmon in the process, but a great day of fishing.
Monte Smith<br it out of the rod holder is a blast.
This day I did not even get the second rod out as we had a fish on, so we boated that one and let it go.
We fished this way for the first class="blsp-spelling-corrected">disappoint. I thought we would be bucking the winds as the storms we were having, but to my surprise the weather was perfect, we started out by the dam and it was not ten minutes and we had a double, after netting one of the fish, (we lost the other,) as soon as I got the second rod back out it was fish on again, I thought wow this is going to be great, so I worked the area hard for awhile for nothing, so we moved on and had some hits and boated a couple of fish and as the progressed, we had a slow steady pick of fish, when the day came to an end, they had ten fish to take home.
We let type='text'>

Hi all.
I had a trip on Monday the 19Th at New Melones with two great guys.
Now these two guys really wanted to learn and know how to catch kokanee, now they have fished before on there own and were not that lucky, but I tell you what they brought there note pads and took lots of notes and they are now ready to go out on there own and catch lots of fish.
Just by hiring a guide they learned more in one day than spending many countless hours of fishing on there own.
Now this day was a good day of fishing, the weather was just great and the fish were happy to see us as they were willing to bite, the bite was good as soon as we started, then it slowed down, we had sporadic action slowly picking up a fish here and there until about 11:30, when we had our ten fish, now the kokanee action was good for us this day as we boated 8 kokanee and two trout.
The best news is, is this years kokanee are already bigger than they were last year at this time, the biggest kokanee we caught today was fourteen and a half inches, so that is great to see as it is very early in the season.
Hi everyone,,
Wow another post so soon since the last one.
Okay, I had two trips to Melones this week, Friday and Saturday.
Lets start with Friday first, man what a beautiful day to be out fishing, had four people on board so you now what that means, I put out six rods, two side plainers and the four downriggers with kokanee gear on them, with all that gear in the water we had to catch something or at least snag something.
Well it was not long and we started getting bit, everything was getting bit, we were catching trout on the surface and we even started catching some kokanee.
The kokanee seems to finally have shown there faces, no they are not big yet, they are only about 13 inches, however they are fat and full of plankton also a very welcome site to see, at one point we even had a triple but lost all of them, we did end the day at noon with ten fish, four trout and six kokanee, this was a good day of fishing as we should have gotten more to the boat but that's fishing.
Now for Saturday, I thought I could back to where I left off Friday, now the fish were there but the bite was a tough one as we had a storm front on the approach, and I tell you what this shut the bite down, we lost a couple fish and missed some strikes, we only boated three fish on this day, we fought the wind as it would blow pretty hard and calm down a little and then blow hard again making it tough to control the boat at times, but we managed, when the weather finally decides to stay nice the fishing will break wide open.
Monte Smith
Gold Country Sportfishing

Hi all,
April the 2ND I take my two kids fishing to Don Pedro, it was over cast with a slight breeze, we started out trolling our usual fast trolling spoons, that only produced one small trout, so we let it go, Then I switched over to troll for some Kings and i did not even get the third rod out as we have fish on, that was a small king so we let it go and we keep on catching kings, we had a good bite going and we caught alot of kings releasing most of them and only keeping the fatter ones, then we switched back over to troll for some trout and we ended up catching three nice trout, so we kept them , by now it 12:30 and time to go home as I had a trip back to Don Pedro in the morning.
There is alot of kings, but all most all of them are only 12 to 15 inch fish, I know there are some bigger ones out there somewhere.
April the 3rd were back at Don Pedro with three clients and an approaching storm front, I know you are probably already thinking what I am going to say next, and yes you are correct it was an UGLY day of fishing, not just weather wise, but catching as well, I hate to say this but I tell it how it is or was fishing, we only boated one fish, yes just one, and we lost lost two others, had several hits on the kings rods, but it was not even close to comparison as the day before.
Then we had a trip planned for Monday the 5Th, but nobody wanted to get wet as it rained all of Easter night and into the next day, so we will try again soon, and I know the fishing will be better in a few weeks.
Monte Smith
Gold Country Sportfishig
Lets see if I can get this straight.
We have been fishing, but have slacked on the photos and some of the fish have not been photo worthy if you know what I mean.
The 24Th of March I had three returning clients at Don Pedro, we started with trolling spoons from the surface to 17 feet and about 45 minutes had passed and finally, we boat a trout, then another and another , and before I knew it we have five fish in the boat, I was thinking wow, this looks like it might be a pretty good day of fishing, then he bite slowed and we made a move to some different water, after a short while we boated a very nice trout a little over two pounds, all this happened by about 10:30.
Then a south wind came up and it was like someone turned the light switch to the off position, because we never had another bite for the rest of the day, and with the south wind we had a storm front coming in , and that's what had to stop the bite.
We covered many miles of water in search for some fish, what a tough on the water.
Monte type='text'>

Hi everybody,
I received an email from Bill Karr of Western Outdoor News a couple of days ago and he said he needed to run a test on a new product and we needed to go to a lake that had King Salmon in it. We settled on Tuesday the 16 Th of March at Don Pedro, we get the boat in the water at 7:00 and head out to the fishing grounds and get setup, we set out the rods and its not to long and we start getting bit, we fished for alittle over two hours and we caught 10 small Kings, the test we ran were on some new flashers, and I tell you what they really worked great I have not seen anything like this and I don't think the fish have seen them either, as the side of the boat we had them on was the only side that was getting bit.
I wanted to get Bill some nice fish, so I switched over to catch some trout as we trolled along for awhile with out a hit, bill was starting to wonder how long it was going to take to catch something one of the rods doubles over hard! he grabs the rod as I turn around to watch, the fish is already airborne again and again and I'm thinking this is a nice fish, this fished made several hard runs and as we get him close to the boat and we finally get a good look at him, we were like wow that's a nice fish! as I eased it into the net and after a few high fives, he measured twenty inches and weighed Three pounds, so we work the area and 15 minutes later the same rod goes off again and again another nice fish, although it was not as big as the first one it was still another beauty, around two pounds, and then we boated one more trout after another twenty minutes a smaller fish yet, but a good fish, so we pulled in the rods and called it a day, as Bill had a long drive home.
A successful day on the water catching fish and running a test on a new product.
Monte Smith
Gold Country <span and then I switched over to troll for some trout and once we found the fish we caught some good fish, one weighed in at three pounds and another weighed well over two pounds and then some smaller ones a little over a pound, we also lost three others that we seen , but just came undone, so at the end of the day we boated six trout and lost three and we caught two small salmon that we let go.
Hi all,
Okay its time for an update on the fishing,
Lets see we had two trips this week at Don Pedro.
The first trip was Monday the 8Th of Feb, the fishing was okay, it was not as fast as I would have liked, but we still boated 8 fish and lost a couple and missed four strikes, the fish are still in the top 12 feet of water, we covered several miles of water to find our fish.
Also on Monday an eight pound brown was caught out of Don Pedro, not by us, although it should would have been nice to catch a monster fish like that.
Now on Thursday the 11Th we fished some of the same water, but did not spend to much time there as we only caught a few fish here and there, so we tried some new water and it paid off, as we boated eleven fish all nice fish in the two to two and a half pound range all quality fish!
We only lost three fish this day and we had about four other strikes that the fish just did not get the hook far enough into there mouth, but we can not catch them all every time.
I am sorry as we have no pictures of these two trips, hopefully next time the camera will get to go fishing with us.
Now for some big news, if you have not already heard this that on Thursday the 11Th at Melones a new lake record Brown Trout was caught, yes a Thirteeen pound one ounce Brown was caught, now that is a trophy fish!
Thanks
Monte Smith
Gold Country <span to see what was happening, the water looked good just a slight color to it the lake level on the rise a little grass in the water, but not too bad and the fish were happy to see us and in the biting mood.
Lots of fish today, we covered alot of water and we boated nineteen fish, we counted only the ones that made it to the boat, we only lost two fish today, but had several strikes that did not produce, we kept only the better fish.
No one else out fishing today only saw just a couple of boats.
So if your interested in catching some fish lets hook up and go type='text'>

Hi Everyone.
Well we made a trip to Don Pedro today the 5Th of January, took my two girls for some fishing,
did not know what to expect we started fishing as soon as we crossed the bouy line at Blue Oaks Launch ramp, did not even get the third rod out as we had a fish on, that one came undone and got the rod set again and almost instantly we had another fish on and we get that fish to the boat and in the box it goes, the action was non stop for some time than it slowed down and as we had a fish here and there, then we moved on to new water and started catching and releasing fish again we were only keeping the bleeders.
The biggest fish of the day is when we had a fish rap the kicker motor, got that out and then it went under the boat and got hung up on the jet pump and ended up losing that fish, the fish was at least pushing three pounds, anyway it was a great day of fishing.
We boated nineteen fish and had several hookups that did not produce, now I know your probably thinking no way we caught that many fish, but yes we did.
The weather was high fog and very little sun,but was a very nice day of fishing, will post the pictures soon, the fish for the most part are planters, but still lots of fun!!!
Monte Smith
Gold Country type='text'>

Hi Everyone!
I have been fishing just not posting anything I guess its the cold weather making me lazy.
We have been fishing Tulloch and the fishing has not been that great, we are catching fish just not that many to take photos of and some of the clients have been camera shy so not a big deal.
They did plant the lake with some Brood stock fish, that means there are some huge fish swimming around the lake, I mean Rainbows and Browns in the Six to Ten pound Range, now we have caught browns out of Melones, Pedro and McClure, but Tulloch has just not given up one for us YET!.
We have been to Pedro and caught some nice trout there and I have heard that the shore fishing at Melones has been producing some very nice fish for shore anglers, so i will be heading over there very soon.
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I will be having a booth at the Sacramento I.S.E. show in January from the 21st Thru the 24Th so stop by and say hi and book a trip as I will probably be having some sort of special running on fishing trips.
Thanks Monte Smith
Gold Country Sportfishng<div with good results, some small planters and some good sized fish up to three pounds have been hitting our offerings on our last trips here.
Everyday at this lake is not the same as the day before, so you can not get stuck in a rut and expect the fish to always cooperate as we experienced on Tuesday we did catch fish , however the fish were small planters as we tried many different setups and speeds and locations, this lake can be a tough lake to fish sometimes.
The water temps are around 56 degrees and warming to only about 59 degrees at the warmest part of the day, the water is very clear so that means the fish will be spooky and alot of line out is a must.
Hope everyone has a type='text'>

Hi All,
Okay I know its been awhile since I posted any fishing news.
I went back to Don Pedro on October the 30th, I just had to try some differant things, we did not get skunked, but boy was it close.
The first indication a lake is dead is when you pull into the parking lot on a friday Morning and there is only two other boats in the lot, so I will not be going back here anytime soon, or until we get some cold and wet weather to turn this lake over!
Now for some better news. A trip with two great guys that have been reading my reports for years and has been wanting to fish with for sometime, so the best place to go was Tulloch on
Tuesday the 3Rd of November, I picked up my clients at the north shore dock and instantly started fishing and it was not long before a side plainer rod that got hit really hard, but ended up not sticking!then it went quiet for sometime as I was changing many things and depths and finally we put fish number one in the boat and then another and then quiet again!,I could not take this excitement any longer and changed all the rods to completely different setups and a new location and depths and we instantly we started getting bit and we stuck to the one spot and changing lures and the next thing I know is we have 8 fish in the boat and we lost a couple of fish and missed one or two, so a grim looking day turned into a good day after all.
Monte Smith
Gold Country

Hello.
Well we took a trip to Don Pedro on the 8TH of October, and the fishing was pretty good we boated six nice trout to Four pounds and the smallest was well over two pounds.
Then on Monday the 12Th of October we had a trip with clients and the fishing was ugly, we only boated one trout, yes just one!!!!!!, thought maybe it was the pressure change from the upcoming storm that was coming in Monday night, so then we had another trip back to Pedro on Thursday the 15TH of October, again it was very ugly we had two fish on and lost them both, so that's a big fat zero!at least for the trout we were after, however we did catch a few small salmon, so technically it was not a zero,
I think this lake has been hit pretty hard and the fish have seen alot of alot of fish taken from the lake.
I think it time to give this lake a rest for awhile.
Monte Smith
Gold type='text'>

Hi All.
I know its been awhile since the last post, so here it goes.
Don Pedro is still producing trout, HOWEVER it has gotten alittle tougher, and if any of you have been there lately you have probably noticed the increase in anglers, well that is to be expected.
I mean who wouldn't like to the chance to catch trout from Two to Four pounds, I certainly do and so do my clients!, but if you are not planning on eating them, then just take some photos and release them, one can only eat so many trout and they are not as plentiful as the kokanee.
Okay enough about that, and sorry if I Offended anyone that's what the fish are their for and we have not seen fish like this an years at Don Pedro.
I was their on Saturday with clients and Oh Dan bacher from the Fish Sniffer tagged along for the ride and to do a story on the Trout fishing and the King Salmon and Kokanee in the lake.
So look for the story soon.
Monte Smith<br trip.
The day was filled with lots of rain and the wind was not to bad.
The first fish to hit the deck was a King just under two pounds, then we caught a small king and when I mean small it was about six inches long, I am thinking fish and game might have planted the lake with kings because we caught Seven of these small fish.
Then we finally caught what we were fishing for, a very fat Three pound Rainbow, as the day progressed we would boat a trout here and there.
We ended the day with nine trout and one king as I also got to real my limit in started out reallllly slow with no bites for at least one and a half hours until finally we had a great take down on shad, the fish was Stripping line like crazy turned out to be a three pound Small Bass, boy was we wrong it turned out to be a Three and Half pound Rainbow, what a awesome fish, it put up a great fight!
Then we had a double and only got one of them, we boated a small King and we lost a very nice Trout.
We caught a King that went over three pounds, the biggest Trout weighed Four pounds, these are so fat that they have been gorging themselves on shad for several months.
Then we had a trout hit and it came straight up to the surface and kept going it came out of the water at least two feet, boy sure would have been nice to have a video of that!
This should be a great fall and winter fishery, if you are interested in catching some very nice Trout give me a call.
Monte Smith
Gold Country we have also caught many smaller fish and I mean fish around the 17 inch class, remember you can keep these smaller fish at Hogan.
The lake is pretty low, but you can still launch a type='text'>

Hi All,

Well I know its been some time since I have posted anything, so here it goes!

The last trip we made for Kokanee at Melones was on the 4Th of August with Three clients and things were pretty tuff, the fish were there but not in the biting mood.

I was telling my clients about having Banana's on a boat were bad luck and at this point we had not caught a fish yet. They assured me that know one had any Banana's with them and then one of the guys open his lunch box and guess what was laying on top, you guessed it two Banana's! so without even missing a beat he threw them over board, now you can probably guess what happened next, it was not even Three minutes and we started catching fish although the fishing was not that great by any means we fished from 80 to 130 feet deep and it took us until 1:30 to catch Thirteen fish.

I know the fishing has gotten really tough, but you can probably catch a few fish but it it would take more than alot of work to catch just a few kokes, People have called and wanted to go, but I tell them that the fishing is not very good for the kokes, but we will go if they want too and they really appreciate the honesty and will be back.
This was one of the best kokanee seasons we have had in some time although the fish were not very big like last years fish, but the bite was incredible, we could not keep the rods in the water most of the time, and everyone got spoiled on how fast and furious the fishing was.
Looking forward to a much bigger and better season next year!!!!
Thanks for a great season!
Monte Smith
Gold Country Sportfishing<div and first fish in the boat, a nice Four pounder, then only about ten minutes went by and another solid hook up and fish on, but only to come undone a few seconds later.
This is the way the day was going, we had plenty of hook ups, but we only landed two fish today, we should have boated eight fish! but hey thats fish'n, the biggest fish weighed in at five pounds two ounces.
kokes in the boat and headed for the cleaning station and by this time it was 9:50.sure would have been a great day without the wind.
If you have not released three fish in a row so we could keep fishing.
The kokanee were the usual size from about 11 to 13 inches, fish.
Kokanee power has released the Rainbows from the pins on Monday in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" out on Tuesday the 29Th and had several good fish on that did not make it to the boat and the biggest fish that did make it aboard was a very nice Four pound King that went 23 inches long.
Monte Smith
Gold Country <span class="blsp-spelling-error" still on the rise which is great to see, lots of floating debris in the water.
We set out five rods today with two rods rigged with shad, one on the surface with a set of Vance's slim willies and a night crawler, one rigged with a kokanee set up and the other was with an Uncle Larrys spinner tipped with a night crawler behind a small dodger. Everything out was getting bit however the shad was getting the most bites.
We finished the day with Three Rainbows, Three Brooke Trout and Four Kings, we let a few fish go and we had several missed hits and lost a few at the boat, we never did get a kokanee to bite.
Monte Smith
Gold were catching good numbers of fish.
We did manage a few Rainbows that were pretty fat and healthy, as far as the koks go we have not caught one yet here at this lake, if this weather would Shad on two Down riggers and a set of Vance Slim Willies on the surface along with a sling blade dodger with an Excel spoon on the other.
We started catching Kings on the down riggers that were rigger with shad and had a good bite going with lots of bites from the kings, most of the fish we caught were around one and half to two pounds.
We caught a few Rainbows and the Brook Trout seemed to out number the trout.
The Brooke Trout were very fat and healthy and put up a great fight.
The kings are just getting started and the kokanee bite at these Mother the 19th, thought we would pretty much have the lake to ourselves, but boy was I wrong! looked like everyone else had the same idea thought it was a weekend at first, counted over 15 boat trailers in the parking lot.
We started out fishing off the south shore ramp by setting two side plainers and two rods on the downriggers, and it did not take long to start catching fish, we started releasing the small ones in hopes of getting that nice big Rainbow, and only keeping the ones that were hooked to deep.
The fishing action was great and a great day to be on the water.
We ended the day around 11:30 with two limits of nice fish, we released about six fish and we lost or missed at lesst another six or seven also. However we did not catch anything over two pounds, but lots of action.
No pictures this time so you will have to beleive me.
Monte Smith
Gold country Sportfishing<div started fishing around 8:30 in the morning and it only took a couple of minutes to get our first fish in the boat and that is the way the rest of the day went fish after fish having a blast catching and releasing fish and we ended up keeping 20 fish and we released 10 others and we also lost a few.
Most of the fish were planters and a few were nice fish close to two pounds, if you are looking for good action for kids now is the time to take them fishing!
Monte Smith
Gold Country Sportfishing
<img width='1' height='1' 18Th.
The weather however was a bone chilling 28 degrees with a breeze blowing fog over the lake that sure made the frost appear on the side of the boat and lines and rods just to remind us of how cold it was!
The fishing was great! with three fish in the first 15 minutes of the morning, as we had no problem catching Two limits of Trout before 11:00 O'clock keeping the ones we wanted and releasing some of the smaller ones, bait was the best set-up of the day, as we neared our limits I wanted to try some new lures to me that required some different fishing techniques that proved to be successful.<br
